Coaching Webinar

Hockey Ireland is running the third coach education webinar of their series on Monday, May 18th from 19.30.

The webinar will focus on ‘Developing Talent’ and will be presented by Dr. David Passmore. Dave will be joined by his DCU colleague Dr. Aine Macnamara. It is designed to support the effective development of players of all levels and will highlight the key developmental approaches and practical guidance for coaches of all age groups. There will be a focus on the technical and mental components of talent development. The webinar will also include the introduction of Hockey Ireland’s newly revised ‘Hooked for Life’ Talent Pathway.

We would encourage coaches of all levels to register for the event and as before, Irish clubs are being given priority.  Register here.

LHA 2019-20 Leagues

Further to the announcements of 26th March and 9th April, the 2019/20 season was deemed to have finished due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) Pandemic.  At the direction of Hockey Ireland the provinces were requested to use a percentage equalisation method to determine league positions.

Leinster Hockey can now confirm the final placings for the senior men’s and ladies league competitions using the percentage equalisation method – please see attached documents.

It should be noted that there will be no playoff matches to determine league placings for the 2020/21 season.

Clubs should be aware that placings on these tables do not indicate promotion/relegation for the 2020-21 season, this will be determined when there is more certainty.

Additionally, all Junior Age Competitions – both club and school – are concluded for the 2019/20 season.

Planning for the new season will be undertaken when we have greater certainty about same from Hockey Ireland and the Irish Government.  This will probably be July at the earliest.

Bsc in Sport Studies

The new Bsc in Sport Studies course is a 3 year level 7 degree programme in TU Dublin Tallaght. The course is designed to meet the needs of coaches and sport professionals and integrates Sport Science, Coaching Science and Sports Administration.

The specific benefit of this new course is the direct entry route, applicants need only apply via online application and interview. The online application is now open on TU Dublin website for entry commencing in September 2020.

This is a great opportunity for students, mature students and anyone with a keen interest in sport. Our current student profile consists of Dublin GAA, Irish Basketball and Soccer players and those from a variety of sporting backgrounds.  We also have students who have a high level of interest in Sport on the course who wish to pursue a career in Sport, Health and Exercise performance.

Coaching Webinar

Hockey Ireland is running a second coach education webinar on Monday, May 11th from 19.30. The webinar will be presented by Irish women’s assistant coach Gareth Grundie and Irish international Shirley McCay and will explore the use of Video Analysis as a Coaching Tool. It covers key aspects of how to effectively use video analysis to review performance, analyse opposition and feedback to players.

Their last webinar proved to be extremely popular with many coaches signing up from overseas. Due to demand, some coaches from within Ireland were unable to book a place. For that reason, we decided to give an early ‘heads up’ to our clubs to enable your coaches to book on to the free webinar.

There is an opportunity on the booking form to submit requests around areas that your coaches would like to see covered. We will take these into account so feel free to submit a request here.

Notice of AGM 2020

Avoca Hockey Club
Annual General Meeting
25th May 2020, 8pm, Via Zoom

Avoca Hockey Club’s AGM takes place on Monday 25th May at 8pm via Zoom and it is open to all Members, Life Members and Parents of our Junior section. Email Club Secretary Al Robinson on clubsecretary@avocahockeyclub.ie to request a link to access the meeting. Registration is essential and documents to review will be emailed around prior to the AGM.

This is your opportunity to express your views and influence the direction of the Club and attendance is strongly encouraged. Furthermore, it is a great way to learn more about your Club and its aspirations, how things have gone in the season that has just ended and to take part in the election of the Club’s Committee and Officers.

The Club normally holds the AGM at The Wishing Well in Blackrock as we like to meet in person, but given the current circumstances, we are keen to hold the meeting via Zoom to ensure planning progresses swiftly for next season.

Covid-19 Update

Read the latest update from Hockey Ireland here.

Leinster Hockey will finalize their 2019/20 season in line with Hockey Ireland’s recommendation.

However, no planning for the next season will be undertaken until we have greater certainty about next season from Hockey Ireland and the Irish Government. This will probably be July at the earliest and hopefully before September.

As it stands we simply do not have any clear idea how things will evolve.

We would suggest that clubs and schools should be prepared for potentially substantial adaptations for next season, as may be necessary to accommodate the constraints placed upon us.

A message from Leinster Hockey

Dear Hockey Friends

I hope this message finds you all well in these challenging times.

Covid-19 has impacted every part of our day to day lives and everyone’s focus must be on ensuring they are following the guidelines as set out by the Government and the HSE.

While things are uncertain at the moment, I wanted to assure the Leinster Hockey family that the Board and Committees are working on various contingency plans for when we can resume the season.  We anticipate that the numerous Development Programmes will also be affected over the coming months, regardless of when our sport suspension is lifted.

We had hoped to hold the annual Club Forum later this month but this has also had to be postponed – so we are looking at possibly hosting a webinar that clubs can dial into and expect to have information on this in due course.

We anticipate that the Annual General Meeting will not take place before the end of May and again, we will be observing all national guidelines in respect of gatherings.

In hockey our clubs work on a tight budgetary environment. While we have lost 4/6 weeks of the season costs remain constant. It will be important that clubs engage with employees/ coaches, schools and local authorities to see how these costs can be mitigated. Some of our partners may be able to claim from the Government for loss of income, we cannot do that.

Leinster Hockey continue to explore avenues of support to our clubs and will keep you informed.

In the meantime, I would urge clubs to work on their strategic plans, governance and safeguarding procedures at this time.  There are resources available on both the Leinster Hockey and Hockey Ireland sites or you can contact Claire Kelly, our Executive Officer, who will be able to point you in the right direction.

As we get more information, we’ll be in touch.

In the meantime, please follow the HSE guidelines, wash your hands and respect social distancing.

Regards

Trevor Watkins
Leinster Hockey Chair

Sport Ireland Questionnaire

Sport Ireland are currently undertaking a review of the Coaching Development Programme for Ireland to ensure that it remains relevant to the needs of coaches, instructors and leaders and the players, athletes and participants they engage with.  As part of the review, we have engaged Humphrey Murphy from Irish Leisure Consultants to set up and run a stakeholder consultation process.  We are now looking for your assistance in this process.

It is important that we get as many responses from as wide a cross section of people as possible. Details are on the Sport Ireland Website at this link

The questionnaire will remain open until Tuesday 7th April.
